Your Cat and Holidays

What happens at holiday time you need to go away and leave your cat alone? Even, what happens if you have to move from one place to another place, or maybe going away for emergency cases?

The best solution, provided it is available or offer, is to find somebody who will house sit and mind your cat at home, as the cat will feel most comfortable and relaxed in familiar environment. You can also find somebody who will come in on a regular basis and feed the cat and sit with it for a short while just to keep it company. This may sound like “a cat (baby) sitter” for your cats.

The only difficulty here is what to do with the cat at night as you don’t want it roaming around the neighborhood where it could be endangering itself. It can be locked in at night provided there is sufficient water and a litter box. I believe most of cat lovers only have indoor cat, which their cats will be inside the house all the time. So, by locking those inside the house while you are away would not be a problem. But this might be a problem for cat lovers who have in and out door cat, which their cat spend time inside and outside the house. So, to be locked inside the house with no access to go outside will make the cat become stress.

boarding kennel

Many cats don’t like to be left in unfamiliar surroundings such as boarding kennels, whereas others are completely happy provided they are getting some form of company and sufficient food throughout the day. If you plan to leave your cat at a boarding kennel do some research first to check on the facilities and if possible talk to other people who have left their cats there to find out whether they would recommend them to other people. This is important for your cat(s). Also, please make sure you check on the boarding kennel by yourself, look around the place, check if it is in good condition and clean. I would ask a lot of questions before leaving my cats at boarding kennels. I do prefer to leave them at vets that provide boarding services.

Make sure also if you are leaving your pet at a boarding kennel that it has had sufficient vaccinations to get rid of any possibility of picking up any illness or disease.

If your holiday involves traveling by road then it might be an alternative to take your cat with you provided it doesn’t mind traveling in a vehicle. Your need to test by taking your cat on a smaller road trip first to determine whether it feels ill, stressed, or has any other problems before taking it on a longer trip. Ask help from your vet, about on how to calm your cat while traveling.

Don’t leave your pet care to the last minute when planning a holiday, unless it is emergency case. By doing some research in advance you can save your cat a lot of stress.

I don’t leave my cats at a kennel ever, but know that there could come a time when it was a necessity. This was great advice for anyone who needs to consider boarding - especially the part about what to look for and vets usually being a better place. (Y)

    Hi Maria,

I ever leave them at the vet that have boarding service and leave them at my friends house for boarding, i just need to prepare more food, more litter and some grooming tools. This is for long term holidays. If it is only short, a friend will come by to may house to check on them (@)
