A serious chewing habit by cats is undesirable. First because of the potential of danger to the cat – itself. Second, damage to your valuables stuff. The causes of serious chewing habit by cats can range from teething in kittens to curiosity, to boredom, and even because of a nutrient deficiency. Kittens, like human babies, discover new things with their mouths, and these habits carry through to adulthood.
Below are the kinds of things cats normally chew, possible causes, and ways to avoid it.
- Wires and Cords
Chewing on these wires will harm your cat from minor shock to death. They normally chew on cords out of boredom, especially if left alone during the day. Try to provide plenty of toys fro your cat or kitten. Such as wall or door mounted toys they can swat or bat around, cat towers to explore, with attached toys for added interest, an arrangement of cardboard boxes on the floor to form a tunnel, with holes at the sides.
Make sure you cover the wires or cords, by using a devise that can be found in electrical or computer supply stores. This to make sure they cannot access to them, or make them unpalatable for chewing.
You can also try to apply several rows of double-sided sticky tape to the floor surrounding a large cord tangle.
The best training tools for any kind of destructive chewing is bitter apply spays. Make the cords taste bad. It is guaranteed to leave a bad taste in your cat’s mouth.

- Houseplants
Cats have a natural desire for greenery to chew, and the first target is your houseplant. Some plants can be practically toxic to cats, and for your cat’s safety – owner need to learn to be aware and get rid of toxic plants. Here are some plants that you need to avoid – Amaryllis, Azalea, Cactus, Caladium, Creeping Charlie, Easter Lily, Dieffenbachia, Ivy, Mistletoe, Philodendron, and Poinsettia.
For your plants, try to use apple bitter spray or Ssscat! Product.
- Fabric and Leather
Some will chew fabric. Wool is often their favored for unknown reasons. The best way to discourage such behavior is to give other chewing sources for your cat, example – chewable soft toys. If you can’t put away all the fabric and leather items, try the bitter apple spray on the area where he usually chews.
